Best Books About Writing
Best Books About Writing While we at the Riot take some time off to rest and catch up on our reading, were re-running some of our favorite posts from the last several months. Enjoy our highlight reel, and well be back with new stuff on Monday, January 5th. This post originally ran August 4, 2014. _________________________ As a writer, there are some books that I remember fondly, and think, yeah, those are the books that made me want to be a writer, or those were the books that helped guide my writing. Sure, the novels that stopped my heart dead on the page, or made me laugh out loud inappropriately in the library certainly influenced me, but there were books about writing that I drank in and felt refreshed by, and knew that one day, theyâd prove useful. Here are some of my favorites. Writing Down the Bones, by Natalie Goldberg. Is there a writer who doesnât know of Goldberg or this book? More than 20 years old, this book marries the practice of writing with meditation. I read this as a shy, insecure teenager, and it felt like Goldberg was speaking only to me. Her anecdotes about writing, the prompts, and the gentle guidance in the book were the perfect combination of encouragement that a young writer needed. I still return to this book, and her others. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on the Writing Life, by Anne Lamott. Come on, did you really think the list wouldnât include this one? Her âbutt in chairâ advice has been repeated in my head many times, especially during the writing of my thesis. Her unpretentious, fresh attitude and basic, straightforward writing makes this one of my favorite books on writing. Naked, Drunk, and Writing: Shed Your Inhibitions and Craft a Compelling Memoir or Personal Essay, by Adair Lara. As a nonfiction writer who has an internal censor that would put most school boards to shame, this book was instrumental in getting me to just write. Just get it on the page. The examples, prompts, and guidance in the book are highly applicable to everyday craft, and can be used for short or long works. The Courage to Write: How Writers Transcend Fear, by Ralph Keyes. This book should be read by all writers, in my opinion. Who hasnât written something, and then immediately thought, oh crap, I didnât mean to write that. It takes guts to write, and itâs scary to share your writing with other people. This book gives concrete tips on how to overcome various fears that can lead to writerâs block, and shows you that youâre not alone. The Artistâs Way, by Julia Cameron. When I first decided to take the plunge and focus on writing and apply to MFA programs, I was given this book by a friend who said she read it when she was my age. I was terrified of choosing the creative life, filled with self-doubt, and more than willing to self-sabotage. This book, though at times a bit corny, reassured me that it was okay to choose to be an artist. Morning pages, writing exercises, and a sort of Zen-introspective path through creativity made this book an all-time favorite of mine. Ethical Challenges of the War in Afghanistan Essay
Ethics Paper Ethical Challenges of the War in Afghanistan After ten years of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, military leaders still face significant ethical challenges. Because of the challenges associated with waging an unconventional war, military practices and preparations have not evolved to provide sufficient ethical training for personnel in Afghanistan and Iraqi. This essay explores ethical questions that remain unresolved even after a war that has been prosecuted for more than a decade. Unresolved Ethical Issues Many ethical issues related to warfare, conventional and otherwise, have never been resolved. For example, there is a widely held belief that all people have a basic, prima facie right not to be killed. Even so,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦That same rage which keeps them alive in combat also makes them unlikely to show mercy to civilians or enemy Soldiers who may surrender in combat. Perry argues that Soldiers need not be encouraged to hate the enemy in order for them to be effective in combat situations. He further argues that Soldiers must be ââ¬Å"allowed and encouraged to disobey immoral ordersâ⬠(Perry, 2004). With respect to police actions, the question arises as to how serious must a governmentââ¬â¢s abuse of its citizensââ¬â¢ human rights be before other countries are justified in intervening militarily. Another ethical issue arises with respect to treatment of suspected Al Qaeda members who are known to kill noncombatants indiscriminately: should they be treated as criminal suspects, or as prisoners of war, or as something else? In addition, under what circumstances does rigorous interrogation of suspected terrorists equate to torture? Is torturing suspected terrorists morally justified to prevent mass murder? In theory, the answer is yes, because a known terrorist has forfeited his right to not be tortured. In reality though, this practice risks the torture of innocent people given that the interrogator may lack sufficient evidence to know that the suspect is guilty. A closely related issue arises if the U.S. as a nation trains or authorizes Soldiers to torture; then moral ly they cannot be distinguishedShow MoreRelatedWomen And Girls s Rights1565 Words à |à 7 Pages Title - Women and girls fight for their right to education in Afghanistan Background and Rationale The topic that I have chosen for my dissertation is women and girls educational rights in Afghanistan. The Spirit Of Americ The Golden, Endless Future Of Retirement
The Spirit of America: The Golden, Endless Future of Retirement The time is night, but the lights of this advertisementââ¬â¢s city illuminate the overwhelming darkness. The disproportionately large bottom of a modern looking building occupies a major part of the image. The busy street next to the building is packed, giving the appearance of jumbled mess of shadow and car lights. Between the street and the building, the sidewalk teems with a dark cluster of people walking. The clear and visible presence of three people contrasts this shadowy mass. Two of them are a couple; their faces express a sense of happiness. Opposing them is a man, his face obscured, who gesticulates towards the two. This nothingness allows for whomever comes in to claim it as their own; this individual expression of intent leads to true freedom. Together, these impressions constitute a firm and steady brilliance that helps reinforce that retirement with Mutual of America truly is the correct investment. In direct contrast to the sheer brilliance of the building, the majority of the city, both directly in front of it and surrounding it, lies in muddled darkness. This stark difference is representative of the result of not going through with retirement, with individuals assimilating with objects and subsequently becoming insignificant, shadowy beings. Next to this building, there is a pack of human silhouettes making their way down the sidewalk. Unlike the clearly visible people behind them, they seem to be wispy and ephemeral, more clumped together in a mass than being individually distinct, creating a disturbing sense of inhuman

Project Management In Cambodia
Question: Identifying the key personal attribute of effective project managers within manufacturing industry in Cambodia. Answer: Introduction: An effective project management is mainly about reaching an organisational goal with success by proper planning and efficiently using organisational resources. According to House et al. (2013), effective project management helps an organization in achieving specific goals like introduction of a new product in the market, changing the place of operation, creating a new marketing campaign for the company, and others. According to Cullen and Parboteeah (2013), developing a new idea for innovative purposes or reinventing an idea for the betterment of an organization is the main purpose of an effective project management. In an economy like Cambodias, a project needs to be broken down to smaller steps. The job of a project manager here is to identify those steps and communicate the goal with those who are involved in the production process. This is done by prioritizing the important tasks according to the business plans. According to Dy (2013), an effective project manager maximizes effic iency in his project by efficient allocation of the scarce resources that has been provided to the manager. There are various ways of managing a project effectively in any industry. These can be categorized under leadership style. The leadership style of a project manager is the most important determinant of the success of a project. According to Williams (2015), there are six types of leadership: transformational, transactional, democratic, charismatic, laissez-faire, and authoritarian leadership. An appropriate choice of leadership style will only earn the organization their success. The Cambodian economy follows an open market system. The economy has achieved a high growth rate in the last decade. According to Keane and Basnett (2016), the manufacturing sector of the country played a strong role in this growth. The garment industry played the most crucial role in this achievement. The success of the garment industry is followed by a shift to more sophisticated light manufacturing sector. Electronic goods and auto-parts are the infant leading sectors in the manufacturing industry of Cambodia. As the country is looking for an economic boom, the manufacturing industry has a huge role in this. Thus, a planned and organised path is needed for the success of the production systems in manufacturing industry of Cambodia. The manufacturing sector can be better off at this stage of development. According to Chui, Newlands and Plessis (2015), the upgraded local skills will also help the manufacturers achieve the goals. Here, the leadership styles will determine the way the manufacturing industry will flourish in the future. Cambodia has shown huge improvement in the economy based on the industrial sector. Here the major donators are the agricultural sector and the manufacturing sector. The agricultural sector of Cambodia has low scope for effective project management. For this reason, the manufacturing industry will get all the attention from effective project management. This will incorporate planning, tracking, and communication. According to Thet and Penh (2013), planning includes building schedules, assigning resources, and budget creation. The communication involves communicating the tasks of the production in the manufacturing sector. Publishing key milestones will help the process. The tracking will help the organizations operating in the manufacturing industry in Cambodia. Definitions: Project Manager: The project managers make and develop project goals which are chased by the team members in order to achieve the organizational goals. The project managers also create strategies which are there to help the team members in doing so. Personal Attribute: Personal attributes of a project manager are the traits of the person which make the manager a sustaining one. The best attributes a project manager holds are, having a foresight, organized, leading traits, good in communication, pragmatic, and empathetic. Manufacturing Industry: The manufacturing industry of an economy incorporates those entities which are responsible for creating a brand new product using physical, chemical, mechanical transformative materials as resources. Project Success: In project success, one measures a project with respect to some parameters like budget, scope, quality, time limit, and others. A project which has reached these targets is called a successful project. References: Chui, C., Newlands, K. and Du Plessis, A., 2015.
